Plot : Prishchine is the last offshoot of a noble
family. He occupies a ministry in a subordinate job. Refusing the vulgarity of
his colleagues and the mediocrity of his existence, he relies on the imaginary
dream to transform every humiliation he undergoes. One morning in 1833, he
surprises the conversation of two little bitches. One of them, of which he is
secretly in love, belongs to the daughter of his director. They evoke a
correspondence that he undertakes to steal, in order to surprise the intimacy
of his dear Sophie. Now, the content of the letters which he has, of course,
himself written, is in his regard a cruelty without remission. From that
moment, his drift into delirium accelerates.
